HIGH STREET CLOTHING store Zara has apologised for a t-shirt design that bares a resemblance to the uniform Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust.

The children’s top, described as a ‘striped sheriff’s t-shirt’, was available in stores and on the retailer’s website, Zara.com. The word ‘sheriff’ is just about visible on the yellow star.

This morning From The Depths, an organisation that works to preserve the gravesites of Jews killed in Poland, criticised the t-shirt on Twitter.

Other users soon started commenting on the similarities, prompting the retailer to remove it from sale.

A Zara spokesperson told Metro.co.uk:

The item in question has now been removed from all Zara stores and Zara.com. The garment was inspired by classic Western films, but we now recognise that the design could be seen as insensitive and we apologise sincerely for any offence caused to our customers.
